Christmas Isn’t About the Gifts
Season’s Greetings to all my wonderful followers! As we celebrate this holiday season, I want to share a simple thought that has become clearer to me over the years: Christmas is not about what’s under the tree, but about who’s around it.
Growing Up, Christmas Wasn’t Perfect—And That’s What Made It Special
When I was a child, Christmas wasn’t about extravagant gifts or elaborate celebrations. We didn’t have a towering tree or piles of presents, but what we did have was something far more valuable: love. The house was filled with the delicious smells of curry mutton simmering on the stove, the rich aroma of pot roast pork, and the sound of laughter and stories shared around the table. I remember us sitting in the yard, enjoying the evening air, and simply being together. Christmas wasn’t perfect, but it was full of warmth, connection, and togetherness—and that’s what made it special.
The Hallmark Christmas Fantasy vs. Reality
As I grew older, I started to wonder if my Christmases were somehow missing something. The TV was always filled with Hallmark movies portraying the perfect Christmas: snow-covered houses, perfectly wrapped gifts, and families coming together in pristine holiday cheer. I’ll admit, I bought into the fantasy for a while. I thought that’s what Christmas should be like. I imagined that if I just had the right decorations, the right gifts, and the perfect tree, my holiday experience would be complete.
But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the true essence of Christmas isn’t in a picture-perfect scene. It’s not about flawless wrapping paper or snowflakes falling outside the window. Christmas is found in the simple, imperfect moments we share with those we love. It’s in the laughter around the dinner table, the warmth of family, and the genuine connection we feel with each other. Christmas isn’t a movie—it’s real life, with all its imperfections and beautiful moments.
The Real Christmas Miracle: Presence Over Presents
Christmas isn’t in the stuff we have. It’s in the people we’re with and the time we spend together. It’s about presence, not presents. The joy and love we share are what truly define the season. The older I get, the more I appreciate that the best part of Christmas is the connection with the people around me, not the decorations or the perfect gifts.
How I’m Changing Christmas for My Family—And It’s Not About the Gifts
Now that I’m a parent, I have the chance to create a different Christmas experience for my daughter—one that’s better than the ones I had. We might enjoy fun things like matching Christmas pajamas or family photos, but what I want her to understand is this: Christmas isn’t about what’s under the tree. It’s about the memories we create and the time we spend together as a family. That’s the heart of Christmas—the connection and the love that we share.
It’s Not the Feast, But Who’s at the Table That Matters
One of the things that always makes Christmas feel like Christmas is the food. Whether it’s the sorrel, the Christmas cake, or the pot roast pork, these dishes are more than just meals—they’re a part of our tradition. The smells, the flavors, and the shared meals bring us back to our roots and remind us of the comfort of family. Christmas is about more than just the food, but the food always reminds me of what really matters—home, love, and togetherness.
The Best Gift: Time Together
This Christmas, as I sat around the table with my family, I felt incredibly grateful. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season—the shopping, the decorations, the holiday meals. But when I stop to think about it, Christmas isn’t about any of that. It’s about the people around us, the laughter shared, and the memories we create together. These are the things that truly matter.
When I look back on this Christmas, I know I won’t remember the gifts. What I’ll remember are the moments spent with my loved ones, the love we shared, and the memories we made. The best gift we can give each other is the gift of time—the gift of being present and appreciating the people around us. Those are the moments that make Christmas truly unforgettable.
